Standard General Inc. (SG), is a local contractor building much of Calgary for the last 79 years. We not only lay pipes and pave, we are a complete road-builder and land developer. In the peak of construction season including summer employment, SG hires up to 300 personnel from all trades and professions to help us complete up to 100 projects around the Calgary region.

With our vertically integrated capacity in deep utilities, road-building, and asphalt manufacturing, we provide our clients the full spectrum of project management for any civil engineering projects from initial shovel-in-the-ground to final line painted.
Our History
Since 1941 (April 10th) – Standard Gravel and Surfacing Limited was founded by Merv (Red) Dutton and Reg Jennings. With head office in Calgary, the company became a significant force in the highway and airport construction market for Western Canada. A new division formed to service the City of Calgary and private land developers.
In 1963, the acquisition of General Construction Limited, a Vancouver company, owned and operated by John Boyd, lead to a new entity called, Standard General Construction (International) Limited. The new company continued to service the City of Vancouver and the British Columbia highway market.
In the decades to follow, the company has steadily grown through acquisitions, mergers, re-organizations, management and/or ownership changes. Here are some of the significant parties involved who still today remain our valued partners in construction: BACM Industries (1968), Genstar Development Company (1973), Imasco Inc. (1984), CBR Cement Canada Ltd.(1986), Heidelberger Zement Group (1994), and Colas Canada Ltd. (2002).
Along the way, the company name became Standard General Construction Limited and focused more on the growing metropolitan markets of Calgary, Vancouver, and Edmonton (new office opened in 1969).
Colas Canada Inc. (under Colas SA from France which is a global leader in all aspects of transportation) acquired Standard General Calgary operation in 2002. The company returned to its roots with the well-known brand of Standard General Inc. Throughout these changes, the company maintained tradition in providing outstanding services and values to our diversified and loyal clients in respective markets.
Colas Canada Inc. with subsidiaries spanning across Canada, operates all aspect of road construction from coast to coast across our great nation. With vast backing of the Colas Group in R&D,innovation, technical and financial support, our future with the group and our clients will be nothing but stronger together.
