Our History

Standard Gravel and Surfacing Limited was founded April 10, 1941 by Merv (Red) Dutton and Reg Jennings. With its head office in Calgary, the company soon became a significant force in the highway and airport construction market in Western Canada. A separate division was also formed to service the needs of the City of Calgary and private land developers.

In 1963, the acquisition of General Construction Limited, a Vancouver company, owned and operated by John Boyd, lead to a new entity, Standard General Construction (International) Limited. The new company continued to service the British Columbia highway market and the City of Vancouver.

The 1968 purchase of the company by BACM Industries, operated by the Simkin family of Manitoba resulted in more changes at Standard General. The company name became Standard General Construction Limited. The heavy construction operations were retained under the BACM banner and Standard General became more focused on the larger metropolitan markets of Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, opening a new office in Edmonton in 1969.

Over the next several years, a number of mergers and acquisitions resulted in many ownership changes at Standard General. In 1973, BACM was acquired by Genstar Development Company and in 1984 Genstar was in turn sold to Imasco Inc., who spun-off its construction and material businesses (including Standard General) to CBR Cement Canada Limited in 1986. In 1994, CBR Cement and Heidelberger Zement Group formed an industrial partnership. The consolidation of these two companies resulted in the formation of CBR-HCI Construction Materials Corp. Standard General became a part of this large organization. Another name change came about in 1996. As a result of a Heidelberger Zement and its subsidiary, the Inland Cement Group, corporate branding initiative, the company became Inland Construction Limited.

Finally, the Standard General, Edmonton and Calgary operations were acquired by Colas Canada Limited in years 2000 and 2002 respectively. The company is now known as Standard General Inc. (SG). Throughout these many changes, the company has continued to provide outstanding service and value to its many customers and clients in the Calgary and Edmonton markets.
